In a very promising follow-up to my earlier posts on media reliability, Al-Jazeera seems to be working on an English-language channel to be broadcast in the United States. If this comes to pass, you can bet that many Americans will take great offense, mistaking a legitimate, alternative source of information for a blood-thirsty, "anti-American" mouthpiece of propaganda. Inasmuch as such feelings result in ignorance or protest, they will narrow-minded and tragic. If, however, people express not only an openness to this new information outlet but also a healthy skepticism -- an exceedingly unlikely combination, to be sure, but an appropriate one nonetheless -- we could be on to something really interesting. Unfortunately, I fear that such an approach would be anathema to many Americans. But the debate is one worth having.
